What is Collage?

How much do you know about the term ‘Collage’? The following article will walk you through the main introduction about it. It derives from the French word ‘coller’, which means 'to glue'. The process of collage making is to paste or glue papers or two-dimensional objects onto a surface. But, why people like to make a collage? The purpose is to create, encourage and demonstrate artistic expression for the worship of God and the building of His Kingdom. Although collage is finished by randomly arranging images or image fragments, it’s an amazing artistic work.

The origins of collage can be traced back hundreds of years, but this technique made a dramatic reappearance in the early 20th century as an art form of novelty. It was first used at the time of the invention of paper in China around 200 B.C. However, the use of collage remained very limited until the 12th century in Japan, when calligraphers began to glue paper on rough surface. Medieval artists glued gems, relics, and gold to their work.

Collage is made by gluing items onto a base. You can use a variety of flat items such as magazine pictures, fabric, photographs, and junk mail. Paper or canvas is usually used as a base. Collage is often applied in many works of artists and taken as an early assignment in school art programs. Any craft store holds all the supplies you need to make a collage. However, in the end, it’s up to you to find the right pictures, photos, or images.
